No wonder, the world number-one
chess player Viswanathan Anand visited the capital of Uzbekistan, hometown of
his friend and teammate, 17th world champion Rustam Kasimjanov. Yet
another high guest of Tashkent
was the president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan
Ilyumzhinov. And if we add to that the fifth memorial of Central Asia’s first grandmaster
Georgiy Agzamov held recently in Tashkent, which gathered more than a hundred
players, including nearly twenty GMs, then this statement is as relevant as it
could get.

The start of a six-day cycling race Jelajah Malaysia with total length of 1,011 kilometers
in Kota
Iskandar featured 171 cyclists of 24 teams. But only 109 athletes managed to
overcome the formidable distance, padded from the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula to the north along the east coast and
then crossing the country from east to west finish in Nilai. Among them were
all six Uzbek athletes: Murad Halmuratov, Vadim Shaehov, Abdulla Akparov, Yusup
Abrekov, Gleb Gorbachev and Vladimir Tuychiev.

in tribute to Georgiy Agzamov

Chess players from ten countries came in Tashkent to participate in the fifth international
tournament in memory of the first grandmaster of Uzbekistan
and Central Asia, Georgiy Agzamov with $20,000
prize money. During his short but bright life he won six major international
tournaments, and completed the grand master’s norm five times. This highest
title was given to Georgiy Agzamov at the FIDE Congress in Thessaloniki, 1984.
