Spotlighting the mechanism of mass media activity
Committee on Information and Communication Technologies of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a series of meetings in the regions to discuss the bills on the further reformation of information sector, freedom of speech and information.
As noted by the MPs, the meeting was aimed at not just the discussion but also at the development of practical recommendations on improvement of the legislation. The discussions of MPs with representatives of the media community resulted in making some proposals to be incorporated in bills.

One of the meetings took place in Navoi. The discussion touched upon the ‘Support for the media: a factor to enhance their status in the system of civil society institutions’. As noted during the talks, the ‘Concept of intensifying democratic reforms and forming the civil society in the country’ put forward by President Islam Karimov, set important task of reforming the sector, ensuring freedom of information and speech. The ongoing large-scale work in this direction enhances the development of media space, strengthening the role of media in ensuring public and parliamentary control over the activities of authorities and government, and establishment of strong links between the government and the community.

The Resolution of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan ‘On granting additional tax benefits and preferences for the further development of mass media’ to December 30, 2011 was another practical proof of the care and attention to the development of press and journalism. In line with the resolution, starting from January 1, 2012, editorial boards and publishers are exempt for five years from income tax and tax on improvement and development of social infrastructure, the income from the sale of socio-political and children\'s literature, and literature for people with disabilities.
Our print shop prints more than 30 publications of the region, as well as more than a dozen newspapers for Bukhoro and Samarqand regions, says Olga Sashina, the head of state enterprise, the editorial board of newspapers Do’stlik Bayrog’i and The Banner of Friendship of the Navoi region. “We also provide services on production of posters, brochures, invitations, business documents and books. The benefits we have been granted in conformity with the President’s Resolution will promote our business, strengthen logistical base of the enterprise, and motivate our staff from the material point of view.”
