This UN specialized agency
carries out its activities in Uzbekistan
to advocate children's rights in order to assist the implementation of the
basic needs of children and empowering their potential.
Over the years a successful cooperation was established, implemented a
number of joint projects. Currently, these partnerships are actively
developing. The UNICEF works in close cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Uzbekistan, ministries and departments,
representatives of civil society and other local organizations.
The first country cooperation program began in 1995 and was aimed at
ensuring continuity in the provision of basic services to children and women.
By 1999, the emphasis has shifted to providing technical assistance in support
of complex long-term programs. In the last decade a significant increase in
resources allocated to programs of cooperation between Uzbekistan and UNICEF has been seen,
and the focus of assistance was changed in order to enhance knowledge sharing
and development of international best practices on issues relating to the
welfare of children and women.
Uzbekistan in cooperation
with UNICEF, along with 189 countries signed the Declaration on A World Fit for
Children. In accordance with this document, the Government of Uzbekistan has adopted
in 2007 a National Program of Action to improve the welfare of children in Uzbekistan.
Today, the activities are carried out under the Uzbekistan-UNICEF
2010-2015 Country Program dated 30 November 2009, covering such areas as
maternal and child health, education, child protection, social policy and
planning.
