President greets Special Representative of France for Afghanistan and Pakistan
On June 23 President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov received Pierre Lellouche, Special Representative of France for Afghanistan and Pakistan at Oqsaroy Residence.
The President noted that the meeting presented a good opportunity to discuss issues of cooperation of Uzbekistan and France on ensuring regional security and stability in Central Asia, as well as resolving the situation in Afghanistan.
During the meeting the parties discussed efforts by the international community on reinforcing stability and development in Afghanistan. In this context, Islam Karimov pointed out that there is no way for strictly military solution to the Afghan problem. Without addressing such critical issues as reconstruction of war-torn economy, communications and social infrastructure of Afghanistan, without involving the Afghans themselves, without domestic consensus and a strong “vertical of power”, there cannot be positive changes in the country.
Mr. Lellouche expressed gratitude to President Islam Karimov for the warm welcome. He emphasized that France considered Uzbekistan a key partner in Central Asia and is interested in developing mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas of interest.
During the meeting at Oqsaroy Residence the parties have exchanged views on the status and prospects of the Uzbek-French bilateral relations in political, economic, socio-cultural spheres, as well as topical regional and international issues.
