Kungrad Soda Plant projects to expand production
capacities this year. In the next few years, the chemical industry giant will
reach 150 thousand tons of soda ash output per year.
Today, Uzbek
economy’s demand in soda is valued at more than 90 thousand tons per year. This
was the figure that defined the idea of building Kungrad Soda Plant, the only
company in Central Asia producing such raw
materials for chemical industry.
The project
started in March 1995, when the Cabinet of Ministers issued a resolution on the
construction Kungrad Soda Plant. In May 2002 the government workes out yet
another policy document on completion of the Kungrad Soda Plant. The plant was
equipped by a foreign partner on turnkey basis for $32.3 million.
In August
2006, the industrial complex was put into operation. Then it produced 12,810
tons of soda ash. In 2010 the company produced more than 90 thousand tons of
soda, and last year the plant reached nearly full capacity with 97,800 tons
(99.2%), as the initial design capacity was 100 thousand tons of soda ash per
year.
The plant mines
raw materials itself. Annually, it consumes 153,000 tons of limestone, 160 tons
of salt and 1,000 tons of ammonia. All these components are extracted in the
salt mine Barsa Kelmes located 53
km from the main processing complex and Jamansay 250 km away from the plant.
Experts say that mineral reserves are enough for more than 100 years.
Stable
growth in production enabled the company to establish export of ready products
abroad. Importers include Russia, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
