Board of Uzbek Agency for Communications and
Information (UzACI) held a meeting in Tashkent
on the results of introduction and development of information and communication
technologies in 2011, and defining the prospects for 2012.
During the
reporting period, the communication and information enterprises provided to 2.4
trillion soums worth of services, a 19.9% against last year. Projects
implemented through foreign direct investment and loans attracted $266.7
million. Also, companies have invested about 72.3 billion soums of their own
funds.
As of
January 1, 2012 the number of businesses specializing in data transmission
services, including internet service providers reached 945, the total number of
collective connection points reached 1,053. The rate of use of international
information networks was 4.85 Gb/s and the number of Internet users reached 8.8
million. To create favorable conditions for development of Internet services
the cost of channel for operators and providers decreased 2.9 times.
Number of
broadband Internet access users in 2011 exceeded 147.7 thousand. The number of
domains registered in the UZ zone exceeded 13.4 thousand.
In 2011, UzACI
focused on the transition to digital terrestrial television broadcasting
technology. In accordance with the agreement signed with INVERSON Technologies
SA, the company has installed the fourth set of digital television equipment. Now,
viewers in the capital, as well as Tashkent, Samarqand,
Bukhoro, Khorazm, Andijon, Namangan,
Farghona, Qashqadaryo regions and Karakalpakstan are able to enjoy free high
quality TV channels, including seven national channels. Thus, the digital
television covers 38% of the population. Given the demand for digital
equipment, local TV manufacturers produced last year a total of 50.5 thousand pieces
of digital tuners.
UzACI
announced results of introduction of electronic document management system in
practice, software development and its exports. In particular, so far there are
9 digital signature key registration organizations open in Uzbekistan. They
have already issued more than 206 thousand EDS keys and certificates.
The
national communication agency also discussed the main tasks of communication
and information industry for the current year. In particular, these include 11 investment
projects worth $176.5 million, construction of fiber-optic lines
Urgut-Shahrisabz and Boysun-Denov of over 172 km, expanding the
coverage of wireless communications through the installation of 89 new base
stations, gradual transition to digital television by installing television
transmitters in Farghona, Navoi, Sirdaryo and Surkhondaryo, construction of the
second phase of E-education network and others.
