World Chess Olympiad Wraps up Today in Baku

Only one round left to play for the national teams participating in the World Chess Olympiad, held in the capital of Azerbaijan.

In previous reports from Baku we highly appreciated the performance of women’s team, who played very confidently, gaining victories in the games against very strong rivals.

Men’s team in the play with not strong teams faced several defeats. But in the last rounds the team managed to change the situation getting important victories.

In the next to the last tenth round, our guys were able to beat the German national team. Former world champion Rustam Kasimdjanov played in a draw, Jahongir Vohidov lost, but Anton Filippov and Marat Jumayev won. As a result, our team won with a score of 2.5:1.5, and scored 13 points occupying the 23rd place among 150 teams. If in the last round, Uzbekistan players will win the Belarus team, the result would be worthy.

The women’s team lost to the team of Holland. Irina Gevorgyan, Sarvinoz Kurbonboeva and Nodira Nadirjanova played in a draw and the leader of the Uzbek female chess players Nafisa Muminova lost the game, and the team managed to score 1.5:2.5. The women’s team with 12 points came down to the 31st place. Even the victory in the last match with Slovakia team does not significantly change the standings of our ladies.

Among men, the teams of the USA and Ukraine lead the standings with score 18 points each. Russian team scored 16 points. Chinese female chess players top the list with 18 points, while the Russian team with 16 points stands behind them.
