Head coach of Uzbekistan Futsal team, Jose Maria Mendez called Thailand a favorite in the upcoming semi-final match of Asian Championship. The Uzbek team will play versus Thailand today in the sports complex "Uzbekistan".
"Thailand is a very dangerous team, they are the favorites in the next match on paper. I know this team very well, six players were training under me,” said Mendez, in an interview after a victorious match with Iraq.
Moreover, the expert emphasizes, they are also familiar with his training system, which makes the upcoming game even more interesting. In the past, Mendez trained one of the strongest clubs in Thailand "Chonburi Bluewave" and also led the national team of Thailand to the 2008 World Cup. Today, Thailand’s mentor is Victor Hermans, who worked with Mendez in Thai club for two years.
He also said that the main motive to return to the coaching post in Uzbekistan, was his failure to bring the team to the World Cup in 2012. According to him, he returned to Uzbekistan, despite numerous offers from other teams, including those from Iran, China and Europe.
"I felt a responsibility to the many people in Uzbekistan, after we could not get to the World Cup, now I did my duty,” said Mendez .
Mendez thinks, that players will overcome the psychological barrier, associated with the weight of responsibility and the team will be able to open up in the game, after winning the pass to the World Cup. "I hope that the team will be more liberated. Now, we got rid of the pressure, we experienced before. After this game (quarterfinal match with Iraq), we have nothing to lose,” he said.
The Uzbek team beat Iraq in the quarter-finals of Asian Championship, with a score of 3 : 0 and won a ticket to the World Cup for the first time. The World Cup will be held in Colombia from 10 September to 1 October, 2016. Today the match between Thailand and Uzbekistan, will define one of the finalists of the tournament. In the second semi-final, Iran will be playing versus Vietnam.
