International Chess Tournament Kicks off in Tashkent

Miran International Hotel in Tashkent has hosted the grand opening of the International Chess Tournament of world stars, dedicated to the 680th anniversary of Amir Temur.

The tournament get involved the world famous grandmasters, which include the World Champion in Rapid Chess in 2013 Shahriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan), the World Cup winner in 2009 Boris Gelfand (Israel), FIDE World Champion in 2002 and 2003 Ruslan Ponomaryov (Ukraine), and the 17th World Chess Champion Rustam Kasimdjanov (Uzbekistan).

Before this tournament the participants visited Samarqand, where they conducted a game of multi-board chess for young chess talents from different regions of the country.

At the opening of the tournament the organizers briefed on life and activities of the great Amir Temur, and his admiration of chess.

In the first round, which took place yesterday, the players competed at rapid chess. Each of the four members played with everyone, that is, the three parties. Only one of them was completed efficiently - Mamedyarov with black pieces beat Gelfand. All other games ended in a draw, including three games of our compatriot Rustam Kasimdjanov with the other grandmasters.

The leader after the first round Azerbaijani grandmaster Shahriyar Mamedyarov scored 2 points. Kasimdjanov and Ponomaryov with a half point behind him.
