Filippo Grandi of Italy began his term as the new UN High Commissioner for Refugees , succeeding Antonio Guterres of Portugal. Between 2010 and 2014, he served as Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).He also worked at the United Nations in Afghanistan, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Kenya, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Yemen.

The High Commission was established in 1950 and since then was twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize . During its existence tens of millions of refugees around the world received aid. Filippo Grandi was elected for a five year term commencing on 1 January 2016 and ending on 31 December 2020.
According to the latest UNHCR report , the number of refugees , asylum seekers and internally displaced persons is increasing rapidly and by mid-2015 reached nearly 60 million people . Overall, the number of refugees in the world, which a year ago was 19.5 million in mid-2015 exceeded 20 million for the first time since 1992 . Every day, nearly 4,600 people are forced to flee their homeland.
