The UN Economic and Social Council held an annual forum on partnerships. The topic of this year is "From commitments to results: Leveraging partnerships for the 2030 Agenda". The forum brought together a wide range of stakeholders: from governments, the UN organizations, businesses, foundations, civil society, and academia. As Chairman of the Board Oh Joon stated at the opening of the forum, multilateral partnerships play a key role in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. "Governments, the entire UN system, civil society, private sector, philanthropists, and academia must overcome their disagreements in order to make more effective cross-sectoral decisions", - Oh Joon said. He stressed that partnerships activity should be transparent. They should conform to the principles, values, and mandate of the United Nations. Oh Joon also noted the importance of establishing monitoring mechanisms for such partnerships, and recalled that the UN Economic and Social Council is a platform for monitoring the activities of global partnerships. Back in 2008, the Council focused on how to mobilize partnerships in support of the international agenda for sustainable development. Oh Joon expressed hope of that the discussions taking place in the Council will help the participants to understand this issue and said, "Our strength lies in our collective desire to find innovative solutions to the many serious problems associated with the global development."
