Pedestrians to refrain from using cell phones in traffic

Pedestrians are forbidden to use cell phones while crossing the street, senior inspector of Central Administrative Board of Road Safety, Mansur Rihsiev told Uzbekistan Today.

"When walking on the roadway, including pedestrian crossings, pedestrians are prohibited to use phones, watch videos, listen to the radio and audio products, including reading publications ," said Rihsiev.

This is an ammendment in the new edition of the road safety rules, that will come into force on the 1st of March 2016.

However, the mechanism penalizing violators remains unclear, as the Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Administrative responsibility does not regulate such offenses.

Before the new road safety regulations come into force, the parliamentarians will have time to carry out the relevant amendments to the legislation.
