Tashkent has hosted a press conference ‘Interreligious Tolerance and Interethnic Consent – Peace and Stability Factors’ that was organized by the Committee for Religious Affairs and the Republican Interethnic Cultural Center.
Uzbekistan’s population to date exceeds 31 million people, who belong to 130 ethnic groups. 94 per cent of the population is Muslims, 3.5 per cent is Christians, and the rest are those of other religious confessions.
The country runs 2238 religious organizations, 16 confessions, including 2064 Muslim and 157 Christian ones, as well as 8 Jewish communities, and others.
The conference participants specially noted on the importance of ideological counteraction against religious extremism and intolerance. Besides, it was said on the significance of raising awareness of the young people on the values of peace and stability.
