Surgery to help patients with obesity

Doctors of JSC "Vahidov Republican Specialized Surgery Center" begin a new stage in the fight against obesity.

For the first time in the history of domestic medicine, surgery will be employed as a means to help patients.  Currently, obesity is the most serious public health problem worldwide. Obesity is considered to be a chronic, life-long, multi-factorial, genetically determined, life-threatening disease caused by excessive accumulation of fat in the body, leading to serious health, social and economic consequences.

Contemporary society is brought up valueing healthy lifestyle. Quite naturally people question the necessity of surgical treatment, preferring conservative methods of treatment. However, according to authoritative studies, surgical techniques are the most effective and often constitute the only long-term treatment of morbid obesity. There is now a separate direction in medicine - bariatric surgery. In Uzbekistan such methods are not widely used. However, due to the relevance of the problem, the method is being employed by JSC "Vahidov Republican Specialized Surgery Center."

Uzbekistan Today interviewed the director of the center Feruz Nazirov.

We will use surgery to fight for the life of patients suffering from critical forms of obesity, who suffer hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea syndrome. Surgery is the only way to improve the quality of life of patients and reduce the risk of premature death of the patient. In all other cases, we still recommend diet and exercise therapy.

We have more than 50 variants of surgical treatment developed by foreign colleagues. All are aimed at reducing the patients calorie consumption by reducing the size of stomach or intestines, responsible for the assimilation of nutrients. Only such a radical method can cause the body to lose weight and achieve a stable result.

Each case is different, we take into account the patient's general condition before deciding on the method of treatment. We can only add, that most of the methods do not require large incisions, operations are carried out with the help of modern equipment.
